I have to make a decision about which hospital in NY should perform my kidney and possibly pancreas transplant. My kidney function is minus 13. I am still working, not on dialysis, not nauseous, but have to move pretty slow. No serious itching yet. I am going to be 58 years old. Diabetic since age 5 (53 years) Using Animas Ping Insulin pump since 2004. Live alone. Need as much advice possible. I got my diabetic advice from Insulin Pumpers. Now I am seeking advice from fellow transplant people. I like my info when it's"straight from the horses mouth". Sincerely, Birder/Marie |

Do not be very nervous. Try to take things one at a time. 1. Research the hospitals near you. 2. Find information on the surgeons that work there it is all part of public records.3. Also, do not be afraid to ask for mental health it could be a great way of dealing with all these complex thoughts that we have to deal with. I am 47 and 6 years out of my heart transplant and have had many difficulties. Truly live each day the best you can. With a positive attitude and support, you will do much better. There are groups like trio Transplant recipient international org. that has a chapter in New York, reach out for help. It is a sign of strength not weakness. I will pray for you and wish you well. |

You may have already had your transplant. If so, I hope things are going well. I agree with Bill. Research each hospital. I am not familiar with NY, so cannot help you there. Know that you will be on anti-rejection meds, as well as others. The hospital should give you some handouts, but I'd do some research on your own too. Don't get too freaked out though. While the drugs are powerful, they are usually reduced over time. At least that is my understanding and the experience of my husband, who has transplanted lungs. I know someone who had a kidney transplant many years ago and is doing great. Good luck! |

NY Presbetarian at Columbia or Cornell in NYC are two good options.
