Hello. My name is David age 29 from iowa. I just had my kidney transplant last week (dec 12) I was not on dialysis. So my questions are about working while still waiting for ssdi I know there is a 5 month waiting period to get your first check and it can take up to 3 months for them to decide if i am approved my questions are am i able to make any income while waiting to be approved/ or during the 5 month waiting period. also i have vacation time saved up that i want to claim. but if you boss writes me a check it, would it count as income? If you are able to make some money while waiting, how much is it. I want to try to do as much and possible while i am waiting for my ssdi check but i dont want to do too much that i will not get ssdi. thank you. |

David, congratulations on your transplant, and hope your recovery is short. I wasn't aware that getting a kidney transplant makes one disabled, when pre-transplant, you are not disabled. Does getting a transplant make you lose your ability to work? I thought the transplant should make one better, not worse. Social Security Disability payments are meant for people who are disabled and cannot work due to their disability. If you have not been accepted yet, then you can earn as much as you want, but after you have been accepted and begin getting checks, you can only earn up to $1040 a month (in 2013), but this is only earned income. This is not affected by unearned income (investments, interest, or a spouse's income). There are exceptions to the rules, but you can collect past benefits from work without it affecting future benefits from the government. Also realize that when you get your first check, it will also contain retroactive payments from the point that you applied for SSD.. Two years after getting SSD, you will begin getting Medicare, and the Medicare premiums will be deducted from your SSD check. http://www.disabilitysecrets.com/resources/social-security-disability/ssdi/income-limits-ssdi-benefits
