I'm new to the forums however, not the transplant. I've had my transplanted kidney for 17 years and still going. When I look at the graph chart of my overall numbers for the last several years, they have been pretty steady. With slight rises and dips it's usually because I don't drink enough water. Recently I've been faced with a situation that requires an angiogram. I will probably need a stent put into a small vein or artery in the back of my heart. It's not serious enough to have to do but I have chest paint, out of breath and it's just a real pain in the butt. the problem is the doc can't tell me if the dye will damage my kidney or if so, how bad. I know there is a risk but I'd like to know the odds a little better. I don't want to damage the kidney for something that doesn't have to be done. I'm thinking I want to get it done for basic quality of life. Has anyone here ever had one done and if so, did it do any damage to the transplanted kidney? I'd like to hear from you. |

I am not a medical person by any means, but my first thought on reading your post was that I would talk with my transplant team and also have them talk with the heart doctor prior to any procedure. They may have some different ideas or solutions compared to the normal procedure. Best of luck, and hope you feel better.

that's what makes me mad. I've asked them both to talk to each other but they both only say that as long as you know the risk. Neither one will tell me how much of a risk it really is. I feel like I'm making an uninformed decision. I've even asked for a referral for a second opinion but they won't. This heart doc they say is the best match for me because he is the head of the heart transplant dept in our area. The entire thing is weird. They act like they don't want to talk to me about it, don't really care if I want to do it or not. but thanks for the suggestion! |

If you have to have the angio b/c of heart problems, then you have to have it. It is a very safe procedure this days and some claim that it can be done with their eyes closed (this I don't really recommend) the dye is needed to visualize the the heart etc.., if you know you are alergic to the dye thats something else. They try to minimize impact to your kidneys. And if your kidney function is "normal" I wouldn't worry about it, btw love your kidneys drink more wáter.

Thanks bob but that's the problem. I don't really have to have it done. It would make life better. All of a sudden my numbers jumped up 1 point. they thought it might be the meds they put me on or I wasn't drinking enough water but drank tons of water and quit the meds and it stayed up. Now it worries me that if I have it done, they could get worse. |
