I live in Florida which means that I have been exposed to a LOT of sun in the last 41 years. I received a cadaver kidney in 2002 at age 49. I had hereditary Poly-Cystic Kidney Disease. It has been smooth sailing for 11 1/2 years. I was blessed with a great kidney.

I had my first skin cancer removal back in 1985, 17 years before the transplant. I have had mostly Basel cell. I was told recently by a surgeon during MOHS surgery that skin cancer accelerates after 10 years of being on Prograf. I will explore the possibility of a medication change. I will do it on another thread due to this being a New to TB's

ignatz,

The main immunosuppressive that we all take is either Prograf (the newer immunosuppressive) or Neoral (been around longer).
They do, indeed, have different side effects, but they both increase the risk of skin cancer by 10 times.
As far as I know, we are all either on one or the other, and there are many considerations beside just one side effect.
You should definitely discuss this with your transplant team, but I would imagine that they will just tell you to either wear long pants and long sleeves, or never go out without a strong sunblock, with an SPF of 30. They tell us that an SPF 15 product blocks about 94% of UVB rays; an SPF 30 product blocks 97% of UVB rays; and an SPF 45 product blocks about 98% of rays.

I am not a medical professional, and of course, you should never take medical advice from some fool on the internet, so do ask your transplant doc.

I have been switched from Prograf to Zortress by my TX Team. They said its gentler on the kidney than Prograf. I don't know if it's better for cancer but you can do some research and check with your TX Team.

According to the manufacturer,Zortress also increases your risk of lymphoma and other cancers, especially skin cancer.

See http://www.zortress.com/info/index.jsp and look for safety information.

Looks like Prograf also increases your risk of skin cancer and lymphoma. I don't know which one is worse - so good luck to all.

So does Neoral (Cyclosporine)
Pick your poison (and I do mean poison), though this poison also prevents rejection.
Oh..... to have artificial organs, or freshly grown from our own cells.
Well.... our kids or grandkids will. They keep telling us that it's 20 years away.
