Hi Friends,

I am a 32 year old single mom from NJ who is facing a heart transplant. I am taking all the necessary tests now so i can be cleared to go on a transplant list. My issue is that I am not close to my family and have an extremely small circle of acquaintances. I am aware that I will need round the clock support once I go through the transplant process, but unfortunately I do not have anyone in my life who can provide that support for me. My family has been asked and they clearly have other things to do. My friends all have other obligations (work, children...etc). Does anyone have any ideas for me. I really would hate for this to be a reason to keep me from a transplant list. My children are young (9 and 4) and they need me to be here as long as possible. I am scared and frustrated. HELP!!

Do you belong to a church? I have sometimes received support from mine although my need was not as great because my immediate family has really been a great support for me. Are there any local transplant groups in your area? If so, some of the members might understand what you are going through and be able to offer some help or direct you to where you might find some. Are there any other type of community groups that might be able to help? I am sorry that your own friends and family are not willing to commit to helping you through getting a transplant. I hope that you are able to find the support that you need. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Many hugs.

Hi Teflon Diva
I like your nickname.
Do you have any friends who can pitch in and take care of your children?

If so, could you afford to get hired help during the recovery period?

I like Bobbiejo's idea about Church.

Can you contact old friends to see if they know someone who can relate to your situation who might be willing to move in with you for awhile until you are fully recovered.
Keep an open mind because there are really great people in this world.

If you tell us more about yourself perhaps we can help you with some ideas.

In the meantime, please join us and share

Where abouts in NJ are you? I have several friends, several that are nurses back there - they may know of some additional resources that could help . . .

Stay well,

Hi TeflonDiva, in addition to great ideas above, your transplant center will have some good ideas to help you as they see many types of problems and often have a network to help support their patients. Contact them immediately to get the ball rolling and alleviate the stress you are currently going through. You don't say where you are in NJ but many of the larger cities have agencies that can help you. I googled transplant help groups New Jersey, and found several listed throughout the state. In addition, most hospitals maintain or coordinate with support groups. I'd be surprised if you weren't able to find one rather quickly. Keep a positive outlook, I'm sure you'll be successful. Good luck with your new heart - sounds like you have a lot to live for.
