Ok, I had to set up a new ID here as I cannot seem to find my old one. Nearly 9 years ago I received a double lung transplant at Thornton Hospital (UCSD) for severe COPD. A few years ago, members of our UCSD Heart & Lung Transplant Support Group got together to provide assistance to pre and post transplant patients. They founded the PULMONARY TRANSPLANT FOUNDATION, a 501 c 3 charitable, non-profit in 2012. The foundation is comprised entirely of volunteers who are transplant recipients, care givers and medical people. I joined the Board of Directors in 2014. We provide assistance for transportation, lodging, medication co-pays and expenses directly related to transplant care. Applications for assistance must be referred by participating transplant centers. We currently cover UNOS Region 5. In addition to financial assistance, we provide Patient Assistance Kits (PAKs). These consist of face masks, alcohol wipes, hand sanitizer, Neutrogena Sensitive Skin SPF60+, ChapStick 35 SPF all contained in a 15 qt. Sterilite container which is handy for managing medications. These are supplied (at no charge) to participating centers upon request to be given to newly transplanted patients. We work with our local OPO (Donate Life) and help promote Organ Donation. |
