Hello all,

It has been four months since my mother in law had her transplant, and since the surgery she has lost all of her hair. I think is the medicine, but the doctor wants to do a biopsy to make sure the liver is functioning well.

Her AST was elevated to 99 (the week before was 64), and her ALT is 132 (the week before was 76)

Did anybody else had this problem?

Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer.

May God Bless!

I recall that hair loss or limited hair growth is part of post-transplant life, although it varies in intensity from person to person.

The high ALT and AST indicate possible liver rejection. It is vital that she meets with her transplant immediately.

My transplant was almost exactly 3 years ago. I lost a lot of hair after transplant and was told they connected it to my steroid treatments in the months afterwards.

Then, a year later, they switched my immunosuppressant from Prograff to Cyclosporine. Within months, I experience an INCREASE in hair growth, especially body hair.

That might just be me, but definitely worth talking to your doctor(s) about it.
You are not alone! :-)

Is she taking Prograf? I was on Cyclosporine for 19 years and got switched this past June to the Prograf and notice a LOT of my hair is coming out. I am not bald (yet) but that started as soon as I started the Prograf.

To carpediem4u2: Yes Cyclosporine grows hair and Prograf makes it come out :-)

Hello there, I experienced hair loss into my fourth month post tx. It was falling out in bunches but mostly on one side of my head only. It did grow back and has been ok since and I am now on my 10 month post tx. I hope she is doing better and that she has seen her doctors about her AST and ALT numbers.

I think that's normal because my dad had the same problem too. You shouldn't be worried though because that will still grow back after several months.

What immunosuppressant is she taking? I have heard from many who are on Prograf who have had trouble with losing hair. I was already losing hair before my transplant and the long stay in the hospital after the surgery due to complications led me to cutting most of my hair off after I got home for the first time since the transplant. I am still on Prograf, but my hair has gotten much better with time. I hope it may be the same for your mother in law. Many hugs to you both.
