I am on the waiting list for a liver and I am still working full time. Job is more on the physically demanding side. My dr's have all said that anytime I was ready, that they would sign anything to do with going on disability. That was over a year ago.

Like I mentioned, I am still working full time, or close to it. I usually leave anywhere from 30 mins to 3 hours early due to the fatigue and or overall body pain ( I also have a hernia in my groin due to the liver disease. ).

I think I am coming to the point that I cannot work at this pace much more. However, I think I can work part time hours, but the pay would not be enough to live on. Does anyone know if there is a way to work part time ( until the time comes of not being able to work at all ) and get anything from social security. Is there anyway to quality for that sort of thing?

Any info would be great. Thanks all.

I'd be interested in this feedback too. Pre-transplant Huz (45 years old) is considering going on STD in January. Met with an accountant who is encouraging him to draw enough paychecks in 2012 for $10k income to do $5k IRAs for me+him, since he won't be contributing to 401k for the time being. He's the sole income provider. He's been waiting for 4.5 years, this could go on forevaaaaaaah toggling at MELDs 13-16.

Conflicting reports, what is the COBRA timeframe on LTD? It used to be 18 months, but I think Obama extended it to 24 or 29 months. How long is that good for, ie, when does it revert back to 18 months?

Also asked about working P/T while on LTD. Accountant sez it is spelled out in the LTD policy on what is permissable.

When does SS income come into play? Or Medicare? I could use a crash course here. Thanks peeps for your feedback!

.
I never tried part time disability and worked a long time until I reached the point when I couldn't. I first got temporary disability from the state, then went on a long term disability program with my employer. The Long term disability insurer was able to deduct social security benefits from their payment so they hired a firm at their expense to get me into the social security disability program.

I was accepted eventually and after 6 months on SS, I was eligible for Medicare for my medical bills. I had my transplant 2 yrs ago and feel really great. Medicare covered the medical bills and some of the anti rejection drugs... 80%.

I don't know if this helps, but I would suggest inquiring if your employer has a long term disability program. If you qualify, they usually pay as long as you are disabled up to the age of 65. Thats what mine is. Also the Medicare Disability was really great to have while I had no medical insurance. I believe the requirement for Medicare was to be on social security for 6 months.

I thought I would be able to keep working but there came a time when I couldn't. It's good to know what you are entitled to so you can plan.

The SSD rules give you some latitude to work. That said, to get accepted as disabled requires quite a lengthy and restrictive process. They look at the type of jobs you have held over the past 20 years. They also don't care if you qualify for a less demanding job, but it won't be enough to live on.

I recommend going to an initial consult with an attorney who specializes in SSD, The initial visit will not cost anything (usually) and will give you information that is valuable and insightful.

I have a little bit more in my blog. Check it out - see a link in my signature block below.

I agree with Joe - see an attorney. I applied for SSD April 2010 and it took a year and an attorney. It would have taken less time had I contacted an attorney first. The attorney rates are fixed and limited by law. Find somebody who only does this, because they don't make enough on an individual file to make money at it. They have to do it in volume. And those guys then also know what issues and buzz words work. I eventually got two years back pay and now get monthly payments (so fun to see those in my account). And because of this I am eligible for Medicare Dec1st so that's my current crash course! I thought I had plenty of time because I too stayed in the Meld 8-13 range but then developed condition where I get exception points so am now 22 and will be 25 at end of month and 28 in Feb. So its happening,, and I'm so glad I started this earlier. Don't wait - as you get sicker you can't do as much.

I am confused. When does SS Disability come into play? When and how does SSD interface with employer's STD and LTD?

.
In my case , I had to go thru my state temporary disabiity first (6-8 months), then if still disabled go on the long term disabillity with a private insurer that my employer provided. I don't know if that is a law or requirement but many employers do carry LTD for their employees. The social security disability is seperate.

I collected both SSD and LTD, My LTD was reduced a bit when my SSD kicked in by the amt of the SSD.

The LTD was a godsend for me. It was money in addition to the social security disability plan. Plus the Medicare for med bills. I was very grateful that I had this available to me.

If this isn't clear, keep asking. I will answer what I can,

Bob,I am just going through this process to get SSD. I could no longer work like you because I have a physically demanding job, plus 16% kidney function, and anemia. I made the phone call to SSD and went down to my local SS office. I brought with me my recent labs, doctor phone numbers and address, date, etc. The woman was very nice, the look at your past 15 years of work history. I worked full time for the last 15 years at the same job. So I think that made at least some of the paper work easier. The appointment took about an hour, lots of questions. I do think you can work part time from what I understand but you are only allowed to make so much money. It is my understanding that you get social security based on your ability to be able to work. I think you can also work so many months out of a deemed amount of time. I can tell you that I have read a lot about SSD on the internet. I have read some hair raising stories about people waiting years and going before a judge. My advice is to be as honest as you can when talking to SSD and filling out their 26 page questions sent to your house on what you can and can not do. I have to tell you everyone I talked with in SS was lovely. By the time I got home from my appointment Albany was on the phone asking me more questions. Last week when I called to give them some additional information they told me a decision was made the day after I filed. I dont know the decision as of yet.
Here are some of the sites that I looked at after I filed. http://ssa.gov/pubs/10029.html
http://ssa.gov/redbook/eng/main.htm
I did not get a disability lawyer, because I wanted to get it without one and I thought if I was denied I would just wait till I was on dialysis and then I would get it then.
