My husband is waiting to get on transplant list and he is having trouble going to sleep. He hasn't slept 6 hours in the last 5 days. A friend suggested melatonin. Has anyone with cirhrrosis used this with any success ?. Is it harmful to the liver? |

My clock turned around, I couldn't sleep at night. I would sleep about 2 hours a day in the morning and then cat nap throughout the day. The doctors told me I could take melatonin, but it didn't work. You can also try the green teas for sleep and rest, but I couldn't hardley drink anything either. After my transplant, I didn't sleep much either. But after a month or so, I was back to normal. Now I can sleep like a baby, it's so nice!! Just remember, all of the pain, suffering and discomfort will go away as soon as he gets the new liver. I described it as God himself breathing life into me. It's amazing.

I had a liver/kidney transplant in August, 2011, in St Louis, due to PSC, diagnosed in 2000. I had been able to sleep well up to the last few months prior to the transplant. I was up many nights, or couldn't sleep more than 5 hours or so at a time. I am like NewMan now, going on 5 months post-tx, able to sleep like a baby most nights! Like NewMan said, all the pain and suffering and discomfort will go away in a days, post transplant. Hang in there! Transplantation itself is quite a ride, but well worth it! Remember, baby steps! God Bless!

Hi guys, I know I haven't posted in some time but the topic of melatonin came up and googling to refresh my memory I came across this thread I'm post liver (Mount Sinai NY) and remember my doctors telling me I can't take melatonin. They didn't say why and this was right after my operation so there were more than enough other things to worry about so I didn't ask. Googling about it now, I came across an article saying that melatonin interferes (pretty much blocks) action of corticosteroids. So if you are taking any it's something to keep in mind. And of course in general to share personal experience.

Hi Mashka You look beautiful! Thank you for saying hi. Yes I remember reading on a bottle of Melatonin back before my first transplant that it said if you are taking immuosuppresants not to take melatonin. I do buy tart cherries that are naturally high in melatonin. I believe that the tart cherries and the juice can help with sleep. Just watch out and do not overdo the sugar by eating too many before bedtime.

Hi Mashka I forgot to tell you about almond butter and sleep quality. If have some almond butter one hour before bedtime it is suppose to double your sleep quality.
