Hiya, I'm 32 and had a liver transplant about a year and a half again due to Autoimmune Hepatitis. I was diagnosed with it when I was 24. After my transplant, I lost about 50 lbs. Suddenly it stopped, and ever since then, I have been gaining weight till now I have gained it all back, plus ten lbs more! It seems to keep going up and there's no stopping it....I mean literally sometimes 8 to 10 lbs overnight! I eat extraordinary healthy because of this, and also exercise as much as I can, but no matter what, it keeps going up. I recently got admitted to the hospital and was taken off prednisone....I was also tested for Cushings disease. My liver numbers are good and my kidneys check out. My drs are not taking this very seriously at all, and are telling me to do the things I am already doing (exercise, low sodium, blah, etc.) and I constantly tell them ``I DO``. Has this been happening or has happened to anyone else? Is it ever gonna end? By this rate, I'm gonna be 300 lbs by the time I'm 33. So frustrating, and I also love how everyone has to point it out, like its a compliment or something. Some people have no tact. |

Dear AC, I am afraid I have had the opposite problem, difficulty in gaining weight. I would gladly take some of the weight you did not want if I could. I hope that you and your doctors can work out something that will help you to obtain the weight that is healthiest for you. I wish I had more advice, but I will be sure to keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Many hugs.

I am the same way. I lost about 75-80 pounds until I got transplanted and finally got to 150 pounds (from 130 down from about 215-220). I was eating everything, including boxes of candy bars from Costco and I still couldn't get past 150. Then the holdays came and BAM....Now I'm at 195 and it seems like I can't stop....I joke about becoming fat albert again, but dang!! I have stopped the candy bars and try to eat healthy 80% of the time I guess I need to step it up!

AC, my husband is only 4 months post transplant (his transplant was also needed for Auto Immune Hepatitis) but he has been steadily gaining weight ever since he got his appetite back. I cook him healthy meals and we rarely eat out and he doesn't snack often. |

I don't know if this helps or not but some people have weight gain problems after losing their gall bladders. I take fish oil to help balance out not having one. You could do some research into the effects of gall bladder removal. |

Yes, this is a common problem. For a year, I didn't put on a pound, and then suddenly. My rapid weight gain was found to be due to sugar issues. You may wish to have your A1C checked.

OMG. I am so happy you brought this up. I too cannot lose weight despite dieting and exercise which I keep increasing to no avail. I was a good weight most of my life, then gained when my illness started years ago. Prior to that, I did not have weight issues.. Since my surgery, I have worked so hard to take it off and it is impossible. I tried the ZONE diet . I Read one of the books written by Barry Sears Phd. who designed the diet based on tremendous research. "the inflammation zone" is the book I read... He has a real griip on anatomy and he describes what causes weight and health issues. My doctor recommended it saying "I can't guarantee you'll lose weight but you will get healthy". He was right. My health is better than its been in a long time. Dr Sears describes weight gain as a major imbalance in the body mostly with hormones, insulin. the diet is supposed to put you back in balance. I increased my exercise to walking in the park and 3 Zumba classes a week. My stamina has improved dramatically. I take prograf which messes with your insulin levels so you can become diabetic. I had to take insulin when I was on high does of prograf. Since that was decreased, I no longer take insulin. I take a mild pill and am decreasing that as my insulin is returning to normal. Having insullin issues does not help weight loss. I keep trying and think my balance will shift back one day if I keep up with this and the weight will come off. I figure if I could get through liver failure, then a transplant, I could do anything.... Does anyone know if weight gain is a side effect of any of the drugs.

A1C levels pertain to your sugar/insulin. A glucose test measures your sugar on the day of the lab test. A1C measures sugar levels for a longer period of time. It's a simple blood test added on to your liver tests. Mine is taken every blood test. Taking prograf raises your sugar levels. Not sure about the others. Me sugar has come way down since my prograf was decreased. I have just joined Weight Watchers to see if a structured diet scenario will help.

Regarding increased glucose levels, cinnamon helps to lower them. I began using cinnamon liberally until I found my glucose levels staying within the norm. |

Thanks for everyone's info. <3 But I have a question, if this is a common problem, why do my Drs pretend to not know what I am talking about and not take me seriously? Is it because I am a lowly Medicaid insurance person that only pays them 18 cents on the dollar, so therefore, why waste their time cuz they arent making much off me? Like a kind of "I got a liver transplant, we do ur meds, deal with it"? Cuz thats how I kind of feel. Dont get me wrong, I'm not being a total JERK who doesnt appreciate the fact they saved my life, but its been a year and a half, and I feel like they are taking me less and less seriously. Just as long as I have the essentials and my liver isnt goin to rejection, other problems are "my fault". I'm sorry, not to sound horrid and incredibly unappreciative, but when my dr announced to the clinic (when I honestly think he thought I couldnt hear him) that I gained weight. I lost ALL respect. I felt like yeah u gave me a liver, but that doesnt mean u can act like God, and I have to kiss ur for the rest of my life. I dont know if anyone else has doctors that are THAT arrogant, hopefully, yall will never meet mine.
