My step brother had an emergency transplant last year, he is a 16 year old white male. No health problems until his liver suddenly failed last year. He is now on the road to recovery however is now experiencing extreme and severe itching on a constant basis. The doctors can not find an explanation of what is causing this itching or have any ideas on how to stop it which is what has lead me to this web site. I am praying to find someone that has or knows another person that has gone through the same thing and has maybe found a solution? |

Normally, itching of this type is caused by liver issues. I would presume these are normal. So, the other option may be reactions to his immune suppressants. You may wish to check with the doctors on this.

How are his liver levels doing in his bloodwork? Has he started any other new medications since his transplant besides the immunosuppressant? Perhaps he is having a reaction to one of these or the immunosuppressant. Are there any kind of rashes or skin discolorations on his skin that might be a sign of a skin infection? I recently developed the fungal infection tinea versicolor that shows up as brownish-tan spots and can be somewhat itchy but is not serious. It can be treated with a Nystatin cream. I hope that your step brother can soon find some answers and get some relief from the itching. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. Many hugs.

I had severe crazy itching which turned out to be caused by my bile duct. My alk phos levels rose as well. There was a simple out patient procedure called an ERCP which took care of the problem. His doctors should check for this. |
