My husband had a liver transplant on 3-14-12. He has lost 20 lbs because he has been unable to eat since food tastes way too sweet/salty/sour. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, when will it go away? Thanks for your help.

I noticed that when I first started to eat after my transplant that food did not taste like I had remembered. Certain foods I liked did not taste good. It probably took several months for food to taste as it used to. I also had trouble with nausea. It helped then if I took a gentle walk after I ate. Hopefully this will get better for your husband as well as time passes. Best of wishes for you both.

I lost a bunch of weight after my transplant due to the same reason, but eventually it got better. I had to force myself to eat sometimes just because I didn't want to go back to the hospital, but I promise it will get better. It took me almost 5 months before I started to actually enjoy food, but everyone is different.

I did not have much of an appetite post surgery. It returned to normal in about 4 months.

My husband is still miserable. Seems to be getting weaker every day. His labs are good, BP is normal, kidneys are fine, no need for insulin. With so much going right he still can't eat. When he is awake he just stares into space--to weak to do anything. When he is asleep he has lots of vivid dreams... talks, plays golf and is very active. He still takes meds for stomach pain and has a low grade temp every night (up to 100.8)
Has anyone experienced this? The doctors don't seem worried.
He is 11 weeks post tx and will stop some meds in a week.
Any words of encouragement would be appreciated.

Jackie,

Please stay encouraged! It sounds like most things are moving in a positive direction. A person does have to eat though. Being only 11 weeks out, however, this can be a daunting task. I couldn't stand the smell of protein/nutritional supplement drinks so this was not an option for me. For a few months, I was just eating small portions of fresh food that didn't need cooked. I.e. fruit, veggies, cereal bars(not fresh but has a lot of needed calories). Gradually I was able to move up to small portions of light cooked foot. I.e. pasta, lean protein, etc. I think the real key here is small, frequent and light portions. If this continues much longer, I would push the doctors for more advice/action. That low grade fever should also be looked at a little closer I think. Please hang in there. The first few months are the hardest. It really does get amazingly better! :-)

Jackie,
Just another quick note.... I also made use of counseling sessions offered my my transplant center. This helped a lot with my sleeping, fatigue and all around general mood problems. They say this is very common in tx patients. The body and mind take a large hit when it experiences a transplant.
