I was wondering what people did to overcome this and if it happened to them. I went for a transplant consult (cirrhosis from pbc) and the surgeon said I wasn't quite ready yet but if I was he wouldn't touch me because of my weight. I am 5 ft 5 in and weigh 238. I have been keeping my diet under 1100 cal per day and I've gained 5 pds the last two weeks. Nothing I do helps and my weight keeps going up. The doc says it isn't fluid retention but if I take a fluid pill I lose 8 lbs. However, I am still very fat. I have to do something or I won't get a transplant and Im at my witts end. Lori

Hi Lori Welcome back I feel for you and hear your frustration. Are you able to exercise.?Perhaps try for endurance go slowly for a longer period of time. Have you tried going gluten free? Can you eliminate grains from your diet and get your carbs from fruits and veggies? Are you able to eat more protein rich foods low in fat of course. Have you been to a dietician? One easy exercise you can do is when you are sitting take deep breaths because breathing deeply can burn more calories and reduce cortisol (the gain weight hormone) I am far from a nutrition expert but have read many good books and I love the Dr. Oz Show. I have learned a lot. What foods do you eat daily? You can DO IT!!

Dear Lori, I am sorry that you are having such difficulty with losing weight. I have the complete opposite problem. Either end of the spectrum can be quite frustrating, so my heart goes out to you. I am wondering if it is possible that you are not eating enough. I know that for a diet one does not want to eat too much, but if one does not eat enough calories, this can cause the body's metabolism to slow down and make it tend to store what is taken in rather than burn it up. I know a lot of people who are not able to eat a whole lot due to digestive problems, but who still have trouble with not being able to lose. This may be a possible reason. I cannot of course say if this is your problem. I just bring it up in case it might help. I agree with Hostess Rise' that it might help to talk to a dietician who can better assess your nutritional needs as this is different for each person and thus hopefully can help you to find a diet that works better for you. Exercise is important too although one does not want to overdo. I find that when I am tired, one exercise I can do is use a little pedal device that you can pedal with your feet or hands. I often use it with my feet when sitting on the couch. I hope that you can find a routine that will prove more helpful. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. May you find new reasons for hope to uplift you each day. Many hugs and best of wishes.

Thank you both for the advice. I do try to exercise but either because I am do fat or sick I get exhausted. I don't eat much and have thought about my metabolism. My doc days I'm between a rock and a hard place and has given up. I wonder if maybe I should try bariatric surgery. I am in stage A of cirrhosis I believe. I wonder how long it takes to get yo end stage? Thank u for writing! :-)

I'm the same way as the others. I shriveled up to nothing, lost 70 pounds in 9 months.

Hi Lori Did your doctor say that Bariactric surgery is an option for you? I agree with Bobbiejo and what said about not eating enough? Very insightful thinking Bobbiejo. I will be thinking and praying for you Lori. Newman- Did you have this surgery?

Lori Have you ever been tested for sleep apnea? The reason why I ask is because some people who have sleep apnea have trouble losing weight. Just thinking of you -trying to help

There is hope! I was rejected at a transplant center in Dallas because of my weight. BMI of 44. MELD score of 36. I had hepato-renal failure and went into the ICU. My nephrologist called a colleague a t the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. I was air ambulances to them, evaluated and the transplant team recommended a transplant as soon as one became available. By then my meld score was 43. I was placed at the top of the list and transplanted 8 days later. 6 years post transplant I am doing great! Absolutely no problems since , but I still have renal failure. The docs say they can't tell I ever had a transplant from blood tests and a liver biopsy. Please have your doctor call the Mayo Clinic. They do great work there! |
