I am a 65 year old mom to a daughter who is in need of kidney. Her sister and husband are not a match. Can I donate to her? Has anyone received a kidney donation from an older person and how long it lasted? I have high blood pressure for the last 7 years. Other than that, I am a healthy person. |

I'm sorry to say, but High Blood Pressure it's a contraindication usually. It depends how high and you have to ask the doctors... |

I have high BP - is it bad for the recipient or for me in the future? |

It's bad for you. Your kidneys play an important role in blood pressure regulation, and if your bp is already high, removing a kidney will probably make it even higher. If your other daughter and SIL are healthy, have they thought of participating in a chain transplant? That is where your SIL (for example) would donate to the recipient of the other pair, and that pair's donor would give to your daughter. Truth be told, she would be better off with a younger kidney if she can get it, especially considering that yours may already be damaged due to the high bp. But there are all sorts of ways you can be of assistance without doing the donation.

If you want to donate your kidney, talk to your daughters transplant team. They will tell you what the requirements are for you to donate a kidney. You will also be extensively tested as they will not take a kidney if your health might be compromised. I have not heard of what the age limit is but as we get older our systems become more compromised and can't stand up to the stress of organ donation. |

Unfortunately I think you are out of luck as a donor. I'm 68 and had my transplant at 65. My donor was 64. There was a period of time when we thought he might not be able to donate. I had a brother-in-law and a friend who were also willing to donate but both were turned down because of high blood pressure. When you say her sister and husband are not a match, I'm assuming you mean their blood types do not match. Otherwise antigen matching is not that big a deal these days. My donor and I are a 1/6 match and I've done fine over the past 3 years.

Thank you very much everyone for your responses. I feel awful that I will not be able to donate to my 30 year old daughter. Gene - You gave me hope about the matching. I am still new to terminologies and trying to understand so much. |
