I had a transplant in August of 2010. I received a live donor kidney. Over the last couple of years I've been plagued with kidney infections which, according to a biopsy about a year ago, have caused some scarring. After significantly increasing my water intake, and decreasing my soda drinking, I got my creatinine down to 1.4, which my doc was very happy about. Then after a recent infection it has jumped back up to 1.8. I would like to know whether there is any way to predict how much longer my kidney will last with creatinine that high, and scarring present. I am very nervous that I'll be put back on dialysis any minute now, and I can't get a straight answer from my doctor. |

I have had about 8 UTIs since my transplant in Feb 2011 but none of them has done measurable damage to my kidney. My doc says his transplant patients average about 2/year. Do you know why the infections are causing any damage?
Your creatinine level doesn't tell much (mine is stable and varies from 1.6 to 2.0 since I first received it). I go to the ER whenever I detect any symptoms of a UTI and have only had to stay in the hospital once. Usually they gave me an IV and sent me home with meds.
The rate at which your creatinine level is increasing is important. My level when I was first sent to a nephrologist by my GP was 2.3 -2.7 and it went to 4.0 rather quickly. But I stayed off dialysis until I was able to get a transplant 6-7 years later by following a strict renal diet.
If your doctor won't tell you what's happening, you have to switch to another.
